Membership

Membership in a local church is something that should be pursued rightly. It is about joining in a covenant with other believers who can encourage, equip, and challenge you as we walk this Christian life.

Don’t go where it is all fine music and grand talk and beautiful architecture; those things will neither fill anybody’s stomach nor feed his soul. Go where the gospel is preached, the gospel that really feeds your soul, and go often. - Charles Spurgeon

At FBC Tom Bean, we are committed to preaching the Word of God, working to equip the saints, encouraging families, and engaging in our community.  If you have been searching for a church family, or attending FBC Tom Bean and are ready to commit to being a member, we invite you to begin that conversation with our pastor, Patrick Bottoms.

Steps to Membership

1) You must be a Christian- This involves having acknowledged your need for a Savior, repenting of your sins, and believing that Jesus Christ is that Savior.

2) Meet with one of the Elders, this is a chance to ask questions, and for us to get to know you!

3) You will then on a Sunday morning be welcomed and presented as a new member

Life as a church member:

  1. Receive all the blessings Christ bestows

  2. Under the spiritual care of the church’s leaders

  3. Belonging to a community of people invested in each other’s welfare

  4. Working and Worshiping alongside people mutually committed to the One whom our own souls love best.

  5. We fully live out our identity!!

As part of Membership we ask that you:

  1. Submit to the leaders of your church

    • Christ has given a gift to the church in this world: pastors and teachers   (Ephesians 4:8-11).

    • Hebrews 13:17 tells us, “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with JOY and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.”

    • How to Submit to the leaders

      1. Gladly receive the Word when they preach and teach it!!

      2. Seek to put the sermons into practice!

      3. Turn to them for biblical counsel

      4. Commit ourselves to implementing their vision for the church.

    • Under the authority of godly leadership, our souls receive the tender ministry of Christ himself (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

  2. Pray for your church!!

    • Nothing will help us love our church more than prayer.

    • By God’s design the church is diverse, and we may not all share the same interests or life stages, yet God has called us to love one another.

    • In prayer:

      1. We have a chance to “rejoice with those who rejoice” and “weep with those who weep” (Rom 12:15)

      2. The members of the church “bear one another’s burdens” (Gal 6:2)

      3. We invest in the good of those who share our identity.

  3.  Support your church in her worship and work

    • Be present when the church gathers!!

    • When God’s people are meeting, we are there adding our voices to the praise, joining our hearts to prayer, and submitting to the Word.

    • Use your gifts so serve the church!!

      • Not for your own aims, but for the "common good" (1 Cor 12:7)

      • Assist the church's work however you can!!

Though the world would tell us that church is an option, an irrelevance, or even an obstacle, we know better. Our identity is eternally connected to the people of God. We are EACH a VITAL part of the church, and the church is essential to who we are.
